About Towcester
In England’s Northamptonshire, the market town of Towcester is prosperous. The previous administrative centre of the South Northamptonshire district council is now located in West Northamptonshire.
One of the nation’s oldest continually inhabited cities is Towcester. It was Lactodurum, a Roman settlement on Watling Street, the current A5. This marked the border between the Danelaw and the Wessex realm in Saxon times. In The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens, Towcester is mentioned as one of Mr. Pickwick’s stops throughout his journey. Many national horseracing competitions have been held at the nearby racetrack.
The government decided that Towcester was remote enough from any major cities that may be targets during World War II to absorb a large number of refugees from London. The town managed to avoid any significant aerial assaults, although it was hit twice, first by an aircraft that dropped its final two bombs after attacking neighbouring Rugby. A German aircraft launched eight bombs at the village in a “drop and run” raid a few months later.
At the time of the 1961 Census, there were 2,743 people living there; by the 2011 Census, there were 9,252, representing an increase of roughly 3% each year. Since then, it has grown quickly, and there are plans to grow it even more. An additional 3,300 homes would mean an increase in population of almost 8,250. In the first part of 2015, improvements were made to the connections between the A43 and the Watling Street roundabout, including traffic signal controls.
