In England’s Northamptonshire, the market town of Towcester is prosperous. The previous administrative centre of the South Northamptonshire district council is now located in West Northamptonshire.

One of the nation’s oldest continually inhabited cities is Towcester. It was Lactodurum, a Roman settlement on Watling Street, the current A5. This marked the border between the Danelaw and the Wessex realm in Saxon times. In The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens, Towcester is mentioned as one of Mr. Pickwick’s stops along his journey. Many national horseracing competitions have been held at the nearby racetrack.

The government decided that Towcester was remote enough from any major cities that might be targets during World War II to absorb a large number of evacuees from London. The town managed to avoid any significant aerial assaults, but it was hit twice, first by a plane that dropped its final two bombs after attacking nearby Rugby. A German bomber launched eight bombs at the village in a “drop and run” raid a few months later.

The town was given new life during the automotive age. Although the A5 trunk traffic is now detoured by the A43, it still runs directly through the mediaeval market town centre at certain periods of the day, causing traffic bottlenecks. The town centre has been designated an air quality control area as a result of the ensuing pollution. The West Northamptonshire Development Corporation’s plans to expand the town in 2007 include the construction of an A5 north-south bypass.
