About Gutter Cleaning Wath upon Dearne

Wath upon Dearne is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England, located south of the River Dearne and approximately halfway between Barnsley and Doncaster. It is 5 miles (8 km) north of Rotherham. In 2011, there were 11,816 people living there. It has a twin in the French town of Saint-Jean-de-Bournay.

Wath was a part of Yorkshire’s West Riding historic county up until local government reform in 1974. Up until the middle of the 19th century, the town featured a racetrack connected to the estate at neighbouring Wentworth that was significant for the region. This was abandoned, although remnants can still be seen between Wath and Swinton, and streets bear its memory. A pottery existed at Newhill, adjacent to clay resources, although it was eclipsed by the Rockingham Pottery in Swinton, which is also close by. James Montgomery, a poet and newspaper editor who lived there at the time, referred to it as “the Queen of Villages” at the start of the 20th century. As coal mining advanced in the 19th and 20th centuries, this rural character altered quickly.

Montgomery Square, home to the town’s principal stores, the library, and the bus station, is the focal point of Wath upon Dearne. Its neighbour to the west is the sizable Norman All Saints Church, which sits on a verdant green beside Wath Hall, Montgomery Hall, and a Dearne Valley College campus. A Wetherspoons location and Wath Tap, Rotherham’s first micro-pub that specialises in locally produced genuine ale, are among the several pubs in the town centre. Wath Hall operated as Wath upon Dearne’s local government centre from 1892 to 1974.
