History of Lewes

Lewes is situated where the River Ouse passes through a small opening in the South Downs’ east-west line. Early on, during the Iron Age, a hill-fort was erected on Mount Caburn, the steep-sided hill that commands traffic between the Channel coast and the interior of Sussex, overlooking the Ouse River and the modern town of Lewes. This was done in recognition of the site’s enormous strategic value in controlling traffic between the two locations.
