Southend on Sea History
At the southernmost point of Prittlewell Priory property, Southend, the original “south end” of the settlement of Prittlewell, was home to a few scrawny fishermen’s cottages and farms. Landowner Daniel Scratton sold out parcels of property on each side of what would later become the High Street in the 1790s. By 1794, the Grand Hotel (now known as the Royal Hotel) and Grove Terrace (now known as the Royal Terrace) had been finished, and stagecoaches from London provided access. The Georgian Era in Southend did not see as much fast expansion as it did in Brighton because of the poor transportation connections between Southend and London. However, Southend’s reputation as a seaside resort expanded with the arrival of the railroads in the 19th century and the visit of Princess Caroline of Brunswick.
