History of Southwark
The oldest area in south London is Southwark. The Roman era saw the first development of an urban centre to the south of the bridge, which was later abandoned. King Alfred built a defensive post there in the ninth century, giving the place the name Southwark. The previous territory of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, and the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey were combined to become the London Borough of Southwark in 1965.
