History is Tameside
The oldest Mesolithic site in Tameside dates to about 8000 BC, and 21 of the 22 sites are located in the mountainous uplands in the borough’s north east. The history of the region dates back up to 10,000 years. Although the Bronze Age is represented in the borough, there is little evidence of Neolithic and Bronze Age activity. The most complete prehistoric funerary monument in the borough is Stalybridge Cairn. Around 2500 BC to 1400 BC, the local population transitioned from being hunters and gatherers to farmers as a result of climate change. The most likely Iron Age farmhouse location in the borough is Werneth Low, which dates to the latter part of the first millennium BC.
