History In Tiverton
The name of the community, which was formerly known as “Twyford,” is rumoured to have come from “Twy-ford-ton” or “Twyverton,” which means “the town on two fords.” The settlement is located where the Exe and Lowman rivers converge. The region was inhabited by people as early as the Stone Age, and numerous flint implements have been discovered there. A Roman fort or marching camp was found on the slope below Knightshayes Court near Bolham, close to the north of the town. Cranmore Castle, an Iron Age hill fort, is located at the summit of Exeter Hill above the town.
