History of Torquay
Torre Abbey, a Premonstratensian monastery established in 1196, was the first significant structure constructed in Torquay. Until the Napoleonic Wars, Torquay remained a little town. During this time, the Channel Fleet used Torbay as a protected harbour, and officers’ families frequently travelled to Torquay. Considering the town to be a convalescence hideaway where they could recover from illness away from the chilly and foggy winters of more northerly or easterly regions, many tourists were drawn to the town by its pleasant temperature (for the UK). Torquay saw a sharp increase in population from 838 in 1801, to 24,767 in 1887.
