History in Uckfield
Late in the thirteenth century is when it is first mentioned in historical records. On the path of the pilgrimage between Canterbury, Chichester, and Lewes, Uckfield grew as a resting place. Around the river’s crossing point, the community grew. Notable local landmarks include Pudding Cake Lane, where tourists could purchase portions of pudding cake from local pubs, and Bridge Cottage, Uckfield’s oldest still-standing home and current museum, which dates to the 15th century. The High Street and New Town portions are where the town grew (the latter to the south of the original town centre).
