Economy in Amersham
Local grain was the primary product traded in the early days at Amersham Market, with many sales going to traders in London. Brewing was a significant activity in the town during the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1634, Giles Watkins (who passed away in 1636) erected a brewery next to St. Mary’s church. Henry Watkins, his brother, served the royal family as Anne of Denmark’s page. In 1775, William Weller of High Wycombe bought a brewery. Over the following 150 years, he and his family expanded the company by purchasing a number of nearby taverns. Brewing in Amersham came to an end when Gerrard Weller sold the brewery and 133 associated public houses to Benskins of Watford for £360,000.
In addition to brewing, the town’s industry history also included tanning, creating lace, and building bricks. The town welcomed the Radiochemical Centre, a facility for scientific study, during the Second World War. This was renamed Amersham International, then Amersham Plc, and is now a part of GE Healthcare through a series of ownership and name changes. With its headquarters in Old Amersham and expertise in hazard and life protection goods, Halma is now a part of the FTSE 100 index.
