History of Avonmouth
The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle listed the mouth of the Avon as Afenemuan for the years 915 or 918 and 1052, respectively, although it is obvious from the context that the name does not belong to a settlement. The region was formerly a portion of the Gloucestershire chapelry of Westbury-on-Trym, which was split from the original parish. On the Severn side, at the former mouth of the Avon, stood the stone Bewys Cross, which may have been constructed in the 15th century. Maps from the early 19th century depict this region as farming. The present-day Avonmouth Docks were formerly the deep water channel of the Avon, which now divides the mainland from Dumball Island, a tiny island.
The Bristol Corporation constructed a landing stage at “Avon’s Mouth” in 1860, marking the beginning of Avonmouth’s growth. The Port and Channel Docks (Avonmouth Dock) Bill, which was discussed in Parliament at the start of 1863, had the first mention of the contemporary name in its title. The terminus station for the Bristol Port Railway and Pier was given the name Avonmouth when it was completed in 1865. At the same time, a hotel, the Avonmouth Hotel, opened. When the new ports were ultimately finished in 1877, a tiny new hamlet was constructed to serve them. The Clifton Extension Railway also connected the BPRP line to the main railway network in 1877, and the Avonmouth Dock railway station was established beside the docks.
