History Of Leighton Buzzard
Leighton Buzzard is a town in Bedfordshire, England near the chiltern Hills and lying between Luton and Milton Keynes. Although some historians think that there may have been habitation in the region as early as 571, it is uncertain when the town was first created. There are several theories as to where the name Leighton came from; one is that it was derived from the Old English word Lah-tn, which meant “farm in a clearing in the woods,” and another is that the suffix “Buzzard” was added by the Dean of Lincoln, whose diocese the town was located in during the 12th century. Another explanation is that the Dean added the name of his local prebendary or representative to the name of the town in an effort to distinguish between two villages called “Leighton.” Theobald de Busar was the owner at the time, and as a result, the town’s name changed to Leighton Buzzard through time. Leighton Bromswold, the other Leighton, was born. Leighton Buzzard and Linslade were both referred to as Leestone in the Domesday Book.
