History Of Luton
Round Green and Mixes Hill, where Paleolithic encampments (about 250,000 years old) have been discovered, were the site of the oldest settlements in the Luton region. Around 8000 BC, once the ice had subsided, towns began to resurface. Settlements have been discovered in the Leagrave region. In this region, Neolithic artefacts from 4500–2500 BC are substantially more prevalent. At Galley Hill, there is a very high concentration of Neolithic graves. The most notable Neolithic building is a henge called Waulud’s Bank, which dates to around 3000 BC. The region appears to have been rather densely inhabited beginning in the Neolithic period, although without a single significant settlement. The first urban centre in the region was the little Roman town of Durocobrivis at Dunstable.
