History in Pucklechurch
One of the few royal villas or palaces in the Kingdom of Wessex was Pucklechurch, which was bordered on the west by Kingswood, a very sizable hunting forest that was larger than the modern town of the same name. Prior to being destroyed, the palace rose to prominence in the two centuries before the Norman Conquest, or in the early years of the Kingdom of England. Later, a lot of the stone was taken out.
The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle reports that King Edmund I was assassinated here, at his hunting lodge, in 946: “A.D. 946. King Edmund passed away this year on the day of St. Augustine’s Mass. It was well known that Leof or Liofa stabbed him at Pucklechurch, which is how he passed away.”
