History in Whittlesey
Whittlesey is referred to as “Witlesig” in the Cartularium Saxonicum (973 CE), “Witesie” in the Domesday Book (1086), and “Witsey” in the Inquisitio Eliensis. The meaning is “Wit(t)el’s island,” derived from either Witta, a personal name, or Witil, “the name of a moneyer,” and “eg,” which means “island,” “also used of a piece of firm ground in a fen.”
Whittlesey was an island of dry land surrounded by fens before they were drained. As early as 1000 BCE, there were prosperous local villages, according to excavations at the adjacent Flag Fen. A Bronze Age town at Must Farm Quarry is so well preserved that it has been dubbed “Britain’s Pompeii.” The Cambridge Archaeological Unit of the University of Cambridge was excavating it in 2016. At least five 3,000-year-old dwellings have been discovered at Must Farm, together with Britain’s largest intact ancient wooden wheel from the late Bronze Age.
